I love this fish bowl

I love this fish bowl stamp (Fishin’ Around) in the new Stampin’ Up! catalog!  I think it is so cute!  And I had it on my first order along with the new In-Colors which are so beachy feeling that I decided they were the perfect colors for the fish bowl.  Last week we were at the beach and I had one day alone in the condo and I spent part of that time playing with this stamp and these colors.  I actually made this project earlier for my In-Color Hands On class (right before I left for the beach trip) and loved the project so much I wanted to make something for convention that used this stamp.  So I made a whole stack of these and I thought I would share the “steps” with you on how I water colored my fish bowls.

Wait – here is the finished project from my class –

Would these be so cute to send to camp or school with your kids!  Anyway so here is what I did – I took pictures of each step so you can see the bowl come to “life”.  First use Watercolor Paper – it works the best for watercoloring.  Stamp the fish bowl image in VersaMark ink and cover with Black Embossing powder and heat set with the heat tool. The raised embossing gives you little wells to water color within.

fish-bowl-1

I started with the Baked Brown Sugar color – squeeze your ink pad a little before opening it and it gives you a little palette in the lid that you can dip the aqua painter into.  The Baked Brown Sugar is the perfect color for sand!  Remember load your brush and touch down where you want the darkest color, as you brush out the color will lighten up.

fish-bowl-2I also used the Baked Brown Sugar for the treasure chest.  Next I used Crisp Cantaloupe for my fish – body and faces.

fish-bowl-3To add some dimension to the fish add the Strawberry Slush to give some darker coloring to the tails and fins. When you are watercoloring its ok to leave touches of the white space so don’t worry about covering every little section – you want the variations of the color.

fish-bowl-4

For the bubbles I used the Pistachio Pudding ink – just a tiny dot inside each of the bubbles.  And you could use it for the jewels in the treasure chest (emeralds) – or use the Strawberry Slush if you want rubies.

fish-bowl-5Now add the water using the Coastal Cabana – just the perfect color!  I started with darker areas under the waves and under the fish and along the little ripples in the water.  And then lightened out from there.  I also added the Coastal Cabana to the rim of the fish bowl – that may not be easy to see though.

fish-bowl-6Let it all dry.  To finish I punched the fish bowl out with my circle punch ( I think it was the 2″ punch – I don’t have it right in front of me to check).  And finally I added a dot of Crystal Effects to each of the bubbles.  Let those dry for a hour or so.

fish-bowl-7I think it is so cute!  I hope you like it too.

To finish the project for my class we put some gold fish in a ziploc bag and punched a hole through the top – added some Calypso Coral Bakers Twine (it works fine with the Crisp Cantaloupe color) and tied on the fish bowl tag and another little tag that says “just for fun”.   here is the finished project one more time.

The Best Things in Life

We are counting down the days – 8 more days left to order from the 2012-2013 Stampin’ Up! catalog – June 3rd is the final day.  Remember that stamp sets will be available until the last day but the accessories and Stampin’ Around wheels are only available while supplies last.  You can see the most current list by checking out my website online store and look under the category Retiring Products.

washi-tape

This card actually has some Spring Catalog and Sneak peek items – not really anything from the retired list.  The Silver Designer Buttons and Feel Goods stamp set are from the Spring catalog.  I thought this was a fun way to use the new Washi Tape from the This & That collection that will be coming in the new catalog.  Just put strips across the card and then stamp directly on top of them – something fairly bold like the Feel Goods stamp set.

Don’t forget my special offer going on right now for anyone placing an order through my online store – it’s almost over.  Read more about it HERE.

Thanks for visiting today!

Let’s Sale-A-Brate – Feeling Sentimental

One more Sale-A-Bration project using the vintage style set called Feeling Sentimental.  These images are really nice when they are embossed.

feeling-sentimental

This is a quick easy card and this is how I created it –

  • Card base is Crumb Cake and the front flap is embossed with Delicate Designs Embossing Folder.  Sponge over the edge with Early Espresso ink.
  • Tie some Linen Thread around the card front – tie  in a bow.
  • stamp Celebrate in Versamark ink on the bottom of the card front and cover with Early Espresso Embossing Powder and heat set with the Heat Tool
  • stamp the Ferris wheel image on the First Edition Designer Paper with Versamark ink, cover with Early Espresso Embossing Powder and heat set with the Heat Tool
  • Sponge around the image with Crumb Cake ink
  • Distress the edges of the Early Espresso card stock with the Distresser tool.
  • layer together and add to the front of the card

You could use any of the images in the set and switch out the word with something else from another set.  Clean and simple.  I hope you like it.

Heart #5 – Chalkboard Frame

Did you love the cute Chalkboard Frame on page 11 of the Stampin’ Up! Spring catalog?  I did and I tried to recreate something like it for my Hands on Class last month.  The frame isn’t as fancy –

hearts-a-flutter-frame

And my original plan was to have an actual chalkboard in the frame to write on.  I planned to take the glass from the frame and cover it with chalkboard paint – well that plan didn’t quite work out for my class – I didn’t realize how long the paint needed to dry between coats and I needed several coats on the glass – so I’ve got two coats on the glass pieces now but they aren’t as smooth as I would like so I think I need to add one more coat with a roller probably – I’ll work on that this week.  Anyway for the class I went with plan B (it’s good to have a plan B and sometimes plan C).  Here are the details on the project the way we made it in class –

  • On a piece of Basic Black card stock stamp the quote in VersaMark ink and emboss with white embossing powder.  I let everyone choose their own quote – we used the Pursuit of Happiness set and also Word Play (You’re in My thoughts, you’re in my heart”
  • Layer the black on a Piece of Pool Party card stock
  • stamped the images from the Hearts a Flutter stamp set and cut them out with the Hearts a Flutter framelits – colors are Primrose Petals, Pool Party and Basic Gray
  • strung all the pieces on Whisper White Baker’s twine and added to the card stock before putting it in the frame.
  • added a Vintage Faceted button and a Rhinestone for decoration

If my chalkboard glass works out – I’ll re-post with what that looks like.

Plus for February Stampin’ Up! has released a new stamp set, designer paper and a digital kit called – Sent with Love – it has the AIRMAIL feel to it – I remember getting mail in those red/blue envelopes from our family in Germany when I was little – I don’t know that they still have those envelopes but I guess a long time ago maybe you had to use those.

You can order the Sent with Love items and the items for the project above (well not the frame) from my online store – just visit my website www.monika.stampinup.net and click on the SHOP NOW button.  The online store is open 24/7 – so shop all night, in your PJs, or any time you want.

Q&A – Chalkboard Technique

Chalkboard Technique

Q&AQ:  I love seeing new techniques used for stamping. Can you tell me more about the
Chalkboard technique?

Chalkboard Technique - To You From Me Designer Template - Digital Download #132811
A:  You hit right on a very popular trend in the papercrafting world! The
Chalkboard or Faux Chalk Art technique is a fun twist on the basic resist technique. It creates
the vintage look of old chalkboards, chalkboard art, and advertising.  Here’s how you can
create the Chalkboard Technique…Supplies:

Card Stock:  Basic Black (or use Garden Green or Not Quite Navy for the look of old green and blue chalkboards)

Ink:  VersaMark, Whisper White Craft ink, ink matching the color of your card stock

Other:  Heat Tool, White Stampin’ Emboss Powder, Embossing Buddy, Watercolor Pencils (White Pencil), Stamping Sponges, ruler (clear is best)

Step 1:  Rub card stock with Embossing Buddy. Stamp images with VersaMark ink. Heat emboss with White Stampin’ Emboss Powder. (Try stamps such as: Amazing Family (#129189 wood, #129192 clear) pg. 7 of Spring Catalog or Forever with You (#126725 wood, #126727 clear) pg. 132 of Annual Catalog.

Step 2:  Sponge edges of card stock with matching color to create contrast. Wipe off excess ink with tissue.  Lightly sponge around embossed images and in blank areas with Whisper White Craft ink. Sponge some areas darker and some lighter to create the look of chalk dust.

Step 3:  Use a ruler or freehand draw lines through or above and below stamped images with the White Watercolor Pencil. Draw a border 1/4″ from each edge of the card stock with the White Watercolor Pencil to create a frame around the chalkboard. Remember this is all “chalk” drawing on a board so being perfectly neat isn’t necessary!

OPTIONAL:  If desired go back and shadow stamp over embossed images with Whisper White Craft ink. By stamping over, but slightly off center of the original image you create a blurred shadow effect. Allow craft ink to dry.

Step 4:  Embellish with vintage items such as bits of Doily, ribbon, Delicate Details Lace Tape (#130966), Paper Doilies (#129399), Linen Thread (#104199), Baker’s Twine, buttons, or pieces from the Artisan Embellishments Kit (#129328).

Treat Wrapper Swaps

At my last PAWS team meeting we had a treat wrapper swap and I wanted to share all the cute ideas with you. Hopefully I remembered correctly who made all of these (I don’t have them with me to check). I’m in VA at my sister-in-laws house – we did some crafting yesterday and have plans to do more – I’ll share those ideas later.

Anne’s swap – reindeer treat cups – color the large pearl with a red sharpie for the red nose

Fran’s swap – a little purse made from the framelits – she showed us how to make these for one of our M&T projects

Joyce’s swap – Two Tags die Mr. & Mrs. snowman

Laree’s swap – hot cocoa pocket

Leishman’s Swap – Pillow Pocket pouch

Lisa’s swap – Hot cocoa pouch

Monika’s Swap – rolo snowmen with fabric hats and scarves

My snowman idea came from Cindee Wilkinson – I thought the ones she posted were so cute I wanted to make something similar.  The eyes are pearls and I colored mine by mashing them into my versamark ink pad so they got covered with ink then pouring black embossing powder over them – then I carefully heat set – and then I had black pearls. I did use our new Heat Tool which has a high and a low setting – I imagine if it was too hot you could melt or burn these pearls – so do it carefully.  I’m going to try some of our other colored embossing powders too.

I wanted a punched nose and was trying to figure out which punch to use – finally I realized the Mitten Punch was perfect – use the thumb for the nose – here is what it looks like when I punched it –

Then I used a Pumpkin Pie marker to add some lines like a real carrot would have.  Sponge the edges a bit too to add some dimension to it.  It was the perfect little carrot nose.

Our meetings are so much fun – I enjoying getting together with everyone – my downline, my adopted downline and all my sidelines.  Come join my team and join the fun!  Join today and take advantage of the Online Extravaganza specials and the ONE DAY only Doorbusters – you could really build a deal of starter kit – plus you still get the free st of Ink Pads too!  Join today by visiting my website and then you can take advantage of all the added demonstrator discounts for the rest of the week.  If you have questions send me an email – I’ll be checking throughout the day!

And here is a picture of most of the group that was at the meeting – Joyce is missing and I’m missing (I was behind the camera).
