MDS using a custom background

Last week at Digi Crop nite I gave the girls a challenge to use the Custom Background feature in their project.  Here is my example –

San Francisco 2013-025

I also gave them a sketch to work off of – a sketch often helps give you a place to start.  My page follows the sketch.  And I used photos from a day trip we took to Santa Cruz – we weren’t there very long and the pictures are mostly from when we walked down the pier.

Using a custom background and selecting a photo is one of the fun things that you can do with My Digital Studio that doesn’t really work with traditional scrapbooking.  In case you haven’t tried it before here are a few tips to get you started.

  • Open your My Digital Studio Project and get to a blank page.  mds custom background
  • Open the Design Center on the right side and go to Background Papers.
  • Click on the CUSTOM option.
  • It will open up a screen for you to browse your computer and find the photo you want to use.  Add it.
  • Now create the rest of your page on top of it.

Give it a try and see what you can create.

Scrapbooking with the Sweet Sorbet Collection

I created a scrapbook layout with the Sweet Sorbet Collection from Sale-A-Bration.  I used the Sweet Sorbet Designer Series paper and the Accessory Pack along with the See Ya Later stamp set.  Here is my 2-page 12″ x 12″ scrapbook layout.

Sweet-Sorbet-scrapbook

The colors included are Crisp Cantaloupe, Pistachio Pudding, Pool Party, Sahara Sand, Summer Starfruit, Basic Black, and Whisper White.  Here are some closeups of the clusters of elements….

After I took out the  cork pieces that I was using I decided to try punching out from the scraps that were left.  I was able to use the Itty Bitty Punch pack and punch extra little flowers to add on my page.  I just used a Black Marker to add a dot in the center of each flower.

There is a punched heart border across the layout with flower sprinkled in.  The flowers are from the Petite Petals stamp set and matching punch.

sweet-sorbet-3I tied bows with the colored Baker’s Twine from the Sweet Sorbet Accessory pack and added them to my page with glue dots.  To keep the ends from unraveling I tied little knots.

Sweet-sorbet-4A couple of the In Color Boutique Details were added to the page too – Crisp Cantaloupe and Pistachio Pudding were part of my color scheme.  If you have been a Paper Pumpkin subscriber you would have received a free gift of these in one of the last few kits – I think they came in the January kit.

The page is ready for pictures and journaling to be added.  What do you think about the layout?

Thanks for stopping by.

MDS Digi Crop Nite & Challenge

Last night we had one of our MDS Digi Crop nites near my house.  We meet at a local restaurant that has wifi (not that we necessarily need it but we do use it while we are there).  That’s one of the nice things about the My Digital Studio software it is loaded on your computer and you don’t need to be connect to the internet to use it and create with it.  You need the internet connection to download digital content that you want to add to your software, or to send your completed project to the printer.  Or if you want to share your creation on a social network.  Most of us shared our creations last night after we finished them.  Here is mine

The challenge we had last night that Cindy came up with was this –

  • start with a sketch or template  (I started with a Rounded Corner photo template – it had 2 photos, I deleted one and made the other one taller)
  • add punches (my background is actually a square punch, and the letters for ETOWAH are punches)
  • add a photo with rounded corners (it was already in the template)
  • use only 3 colors (plus white or vanilla) (I color matched the dark blue and yellow to Ryan’s uniform, also had white and the the overlays are watermark as the color choice).

Everyone finished – even me – yes that laugh at me because I don’t necessarily get mine done while we are there.  But I did last night and I was even late getting there.

On this page I tried out a Double Mat trick on my photo – a long time ago it was asked could you create a double mat on a photo – well the MAT option only allows one.  But what came to me in a dream (no really it did) was this – create the photo with the mat that you want.  Make a copy and paste in place and the second one create the second mat.  Adjusting the size so that one mat is larger than the other.  The larger one needs to be the one in the back.  It was quick and easy to do this since you don’t have to check the sizes or anything just adjust the number on the MAT.  There are other ways to accomplish the look of a double mat but this was what I did.

Have a great day!

Scrapbook – Family Vacation

I created this scrapbook layout several month ago.   It’s based on a page layout in the Stampin’ Up! Annual Catalog.  I used the I Am Me Product Suite – it’s one of my favorites in the catalog.

family-vacation-scrapbook

I still need to add pictures.  In my scrapbook class I make up my samples usually without pictures.  Often the layouts could be used for different things and I don’t want to get anyone “trapped” into what the layout needs to be.  They should be able to use it for what they have.  For this one I had a family vacation in mind.

family-vaca-scrap-left

The left page of the layout is like the one in the Stampin’ Up! catalog.  Just add photos (rounding the corners) on the empty white rectangles.  Plus add a small photo under the washi tape by the luggage.  Add journaling down by the film strip.  After I add my photos I’ll probably add a title with where we went and the dates.

family-vaca-scrap-right

This is the right side page created to match the one on the left.  Add more photos and maybe a few more journaling notes and you are all done.  Here is a list of the supplies used:

  • Basic Gray 12″ x 12″ card stock
  • Whisper White card stock
  • I Am Me Designer Series paper
  • Filmstrip stamp
  • Designer Buttons – Subtles
  • Chevron Ribbon – Calypso Coral
  • Epic Day This and That Designer Washi Tape
  • Around the World Stamp set
  • Calypso Coral Baker’s Twine
  • Corner Rounder punch (or the Envelope Punch Board)
  • Circle punches
  • Designer Typeset Photopolymer Stamp set
  • Pool Party, Real Red card stock
  • Pool Party, Real Red, Calypso Coral, Basic Gray, So Saffron classic ink
  • Jumbo Rhinestones

Friday I have another scrapbook class.  I have a winter themed page perfect for all the snow pictures during out storms we recently had.  And the second layout I have a few things in mind – just need to make my final decisions.

Thanks for stopping by!

MDS Virtual Digi Crop

The weather has been crazy here and we keep having to cancel our regular MDS Digi Crop nites that we have at the local Panera.  Today I thought – why do we do this as a virtual crop – everyone will be on their computers anyway – I’ll just create a Facebook group and we’ll have our own Virtual Crop.  I sent Cindy a message and she thought it was a great idea! I got everything set up and we invited all our MDS girls and we had a blast creating with MDS all from the comfort of our home!

We had 2 challenges – Cindy came up with one and created her sample and I came up with the other and created my sample.   Here is mine – a very basic page

2013 Family Book-015

The challenge was to use one of the photo only templates that are in the Designer Template section.  And find a winter font, download, install and use it on your page.  I found a site with 10 free winter fonts that I pinned on my scrapbook board and shared with everyone.

Here is a look at where you find the photo only layouts in My Digital Studio –

mds photo template

Mine was from the 12×1 Photo Only – round corners template.  And I used two winter fonts – one was called Snow Dream and the other Angelic Serif.

To build the page this is what I did:

  • started with the photo template
  • I added a background paper.
  • Filled in my photos – I did add a drop shadow and mat.
  • Added the title.
  • And then added a flag punch and a text box for the date.

We had so much fun that we are going to do it again.  Now to figure out when.

This page has pictures from our Snowjam week in January.  Well guess what we are in the midst of another winter weather situation.  We had one storm come through this morning with snow and freezing rain.  Now another one is starting (this is the BIG one) bringing freezing rain, snow, sleet, ice.  They are expecting lots of ice which can cause the power to go out as trees and lines fall with the weight of the ice.  We shall see what happens – they are telling us to prepare to be home for several days.

Come back and visit me again.  Leave me a comment and let me know what you think about the virtual mds crop.  Would you be interested in participating?  Since it is virtual it wouldn’t matter where you lived.

MDS Monday Challenge

I’ve decided to play along with the MDS Monday Challenge – today is the last day to add a project to the challenge from the 13th.  MDSM49 – We’re scrapping – click here for the challenge details.  It was a sketch and I do enjoy working with sketches.  I ended up playing along because when we got to the hotel yesterday there was no internet service in the room  – they were doing maintenance they said until early evening – when we went to bed around 10:30 there was still no internet – I didn’t actually check it this morning.  Now we are at the airport waiting to fly back home – and there is free internet here.  So instead of working on a blog post and doing other things I played in My Digital Studio.  And a sketch is always a good place to start.

MDSM49 sketch

I decided to use some pictures from my Leadership trip earlier this month.  It was a great trip and so much more fun when I was able to spend it with my two friends Diane and Linda.  Traveling together, rooming together, learning together and enjoying the manager’s reception together – I’m so glad I had both of the these ladies with me.  I knew I had some photos of the three of us together – a whole bunch from our last night in the hotel – when we used the tripod and the timer setting on my phone – but they may not have appreciated me sharing most of those – so I picked one good one and combined it with others of us from throughout the Leadership event.

MDSM49

As you can see I turned the sketch on its side – I need to be a little different right?  This one was actually pretty easy because there is a photo template page that has 5 photos lined up like the sketch – so I inserted that to begin with.  then I grouped the photo boxes and rotated them on the page to get my position.  I created a new photo box with a 7″ width and a 2″ height and placed it on top of the one that I rotated – copied and added 4 more and then deleted the rotated ones – if I had used those my pictures would have been rotated the wrong way.

I added a background and some overlays, added the round tab punch to the ends of the photos, some staples, and text for the titles.  Added a title stamp in the corner.

Signing off at the airport – we should be boarding soon and then flying across the country back to Georgia.
