My Digital Studio – Monday fun

A couple of times each month we have a My Digital Studio Digi Crop.  The last time we met was the week before Thanksgiving and we shared a trick with everyone an easy way to use a sketch that you might find somewhere as a jump start for your My Digital Studio layout.  We used a sketch from the MDS Monday Sketch blog and I decided to play along and submit my page.  I just realized that my page was selected as one of the TOP Picks!  How fun is that!

2013 Family Book-011

so do you want to know the trick?

  • Find a sketch that you want to use online somewhere – save it to your computer as a jpg file.
  • open your My Digital Studio project and go to a blank page
  • add a photo to the page – and choose the jpg file that you saved of the sketch
  • this creates a “map” for you to follow
  • add your photo boxes and page layers on top of the “map”
  • when you are done delete the photo from the back

I turned the sketch for my page – so I added it as a photo box and then rotated it – then I placed my photo boxes and the punch for the strip across the page.  I deleted the sketch and added my other elements and text.  It was a brilliant idea that Cindy had!

One Fall Day Scrapbook Layout

It has been a long time since I shared a scrapbook layout – it was August!  I was working on my class reminder email for the scrapbook class this week and wanted to add a picture and realized I didn’t have any recent ones.  But I found some that we made in the last few months and took some quick photos so I could add to my email and decided to go ahead and post here on my blog today too.  This is a perfect layout for this time of year.

one-fall-day-layoutOne Fall Day

My yard is covered in falling leaves.  As soon as Greg cleans the yard the leaves are back.  Right now it’s a never ending battle.  And I can’t believe it is almost Thanksgiving!  Normally we travel to Virginia for at least the last 11 years.  But this year everyone will come here to our house and I’m going to attempt to cook a big turkey!

Here is a little more detail on the One Fall Day layout.

  • one-fall-daybackground is Sahara Sand card stock – drag the edges in a Chocolate Chip ink pad
  • cut squares from the Sweater Weather Designer Paper – draw doodle lines around all four sides with the Chocolate Chip Stampin’ Write Marker
  • Stamp the Magnificent Maple stamp on Very Vanilla card stock, sponge some color on the leaf and cut out. Make 2.
  • the title uses the Fabulous Phrases stamp set for the “one” and the “day” – stamp and punch those out.  FALL is cut with the Big Shot using the Typeset Alphabet dies.one-fall-day-title
  • to make the Chevron Design – I punched a piece of thin cardboard (what comes in the Designer Paper packs) using the Chevron Border punch to create a stencil – place the stencil on your background and use sponge daubers to sponge ink through the stencil. chevron-border-stencil
  • Add photo mats, additional die cut leaves and woodgrain buttons tied with Linen Thread.  one-fall-day-right
  • Add your fun fall photos to finish this layout!

Items from the Stampin’ Up! Holiday catalog that I used on this layout include the Sweater Weather Designer paper, the Magnificent Maple stamp, Chevron Border Punch, and Truly Grateful stamp set.

Thanks for visiting my blog on this fall day!

Here I am

If you wondered why I haven’t posted in a while – well I went away on a long scrapbook weekend in the North Georgia Mountains.  It was a really fun weekend and I spent time working on a scrapbook that I have been planning for years!  I just haven’t taken the time to actually sit down and work on it.  But I did this weekend.  It was so fun to go look back at the pictures of our trip that we took in 2006.  Yep it was quite some time ago and we have all changed – the boys have grown into young men and well Greg and I have aged a bit.

I had intended to create blog posts while I was away  but after the first day up there the internet stopped working and well I spent the time doing other things and not on my computer.  I suppose that is good I’m sure it meant I spent more time scrapbooking and more time getting to know the other people at the cabin – I only new a few to begin with and there were about 20 of us there.  It was a fun weekend with lots of crafting and laughing in a beautiful cabin (well a rather large house really) on Lake Rabun in the North Georgia Mountains.

I thought I would share the first layout for my scrapbook that I worked on while I was at the retreat –

west-scrapbook-1

I actually made the layout years ago and saved all my designer paper form this collection when it retired.  Plus the stamp set, ink and card stock.  Pretty much everything I’m using is now retired.  And I’ve ended up making a few substitutions (or additions) too.   The colors that I saved were Sage Shadow and Really Rust – remember those?  I’ve been hanging onto all this old stuff just for this scrapbook.  I printed lots of pictures before I left for the weekend so that I could bring them with me.

I had a whole bag of stuff that I had saved from the trip  and I was excited to realize that I had already sorted it all by each day of our trip.  It was a great trip that started in Las Vegas and we circled through Utah and a bunch of National Parks, across Lake Powell, to the Grand Canyon, across the Hoover Dam and back to Las Vegas.  Something different almost every day and I had all my notes and everything saved in my bag.

And don’t forget today is the last day to join STAMPIN’ UP! for only $25!

join for 25

I have an email going out along with a class reminder for this week – but email service seems to be having an issue getting it out.  I am going to set up a duplicate email – so if you get it twice – I’m sorry but since this is the last day I want to make sure everyone sees it.  Join my Stampin’ Up! team for $25 – today is the last day.  Visit my website – www.monika.stampinup.net and click on JOIN THE FUN.  From there you can sign up online and your starter kit will be on its way and you can start placing orders!

First Day of School – a different perspective

Everyone has probably had their first day of school now.  I counted for us we have had the first day of school 17 times now – that’s 17 years since Kyle started Kindergarten.  And my thoughts on the first day of school are not the same now as they were way back then.  Kyle has gone back to college (he is now working on a Master’s degree) and left lots of stuff in his room and a closet so jam packed with stuff you couldn’t get anything in or out.  So I decided to take everything out of the closet and hopefully get rid of some stuff and reorganize it a minimum.  After pulling everything out I took a picture.  Later in the day I created a scrapbook page and decided to use that picture along with my thoughts on the first day of school now.  I’m usually terrible about journaling but I’m trying to learn to be better – I need to remember to journal as though I’m talking to someone – telling someone a story or answering a question.  So this page is mostly about the journaling.

2013 Family Book-010

The My Digital Studio Elements I used on this page include

  • See Ya Next Year Designer Kit
  • Days to Remember Designer Kit
  • Epic Overlays stamp brush set
  • Storytime Designer Kit
  • Square Punch

I counted the books that I found in Kyle’s room when I sorted them yesterday – 180 – and there could be more hidden that I haven’t come across yet.  Now to decide what to tackle next – the games or the computer parts.

I also submitted this page in the My Digital Studio Challenge (although it might have been late – unless they extended the deadline) – go give it a like and leave me a comment – maybe I can win the challenge.  Here is the link for you.

For the Birds Scrapbook Layout

bird-closeup-2

Today I’m going to share a traditional scrapbook layout.  It’s a very spring looking layout.  But outside today we are having a very fall like day.  It’s August in Georgia and we didn’t even reach 70 degrees – the news said it has been a decade since we have had an August day with temperatures this low.

Now on to the scrapbook layout…..

with-you-bird-layout

This layout idea came from Wendy Randall – she made hers last spring uses papers and embellishments from the Stampin’ Up! spring catalog.  I changed it to use the Epic Day This & That Designer paper – it was a great pack of paper to use for the layout since it had the greens and blues in it plus some neutrals – Crumb Cake & Basic Gray and a pop of color with the Daffodil Delight.  All of these were perfect colors to use with the For the Birds stamp set.

bird-closeup

The images from the For the Birds stamp set were stamped with Black Stazon ink and then water-colored with an aqua-painter and the ink colors.  Then each image was cut out.  I didn’t use the words except for one phrase for the bottom of the layout.

bird-quoteThe layout is all ready for photos.  I hope you like it!

I think I may make some cards with this stamp set and colors – I really like the combination.

Arrows Challenge Completed!

Every Tuesday night a group of us get together to work and play with our My Digital Studio software.  It’s our Digi Crop night and we have so much fun every week.  If you live near me and want to join us let me know – the dates and events are posted on my facebook business page – Stamping Together at Monika’s Place – we will meet twice in July and then get back to weekly in August.  Last night Cindy extended a challenge to us – to complete a project and submit it for the Stampin’ Up! Arrow challenge.  While I played around with a card during our crop all that I could really think of was when the boys were in scouts and would go to camp and learn about Archery.  Arrows = Archery!  So after the crop I went home to see if I could find some pictures from when the boys were in scouts and see if I had any from them while they were at the Archery station at camp.  I had to go back to 2004!  But yeah success and I got to work creating a scrapbook page featuring arrows for the challenge.  Yeah me – challenge completed!

2013 Family Book-008These are pictures of Ryan and Cub Scout Day camp in June 2004.  He would have been a rising 2nd grader (if I counted correctly) – he will be a senior in high school this fall.  I did start with a template page – it was from the Fan Fair photobook template – but doesn’t really look anything like it – I kept only the photo frames and the label for the text block.  Everything else I changed.  Since I could find exactly what I wanted for a designer paper I decided to use something rather plain (Downtown Grunge 1) and used stamps to create a custom background paper.  Can you see all the little arrows in the background?  I used arrows from the Hello There Kit – the color is Very Vanilla and then the Opacity is set to 20%.

Other arrows on the page are The Best Year arrows and I used the coloring tool to color each section to look like the target in the photos. And the arrow pointing to my little archer is from Epic Overlays.

I’m posting the page over in the challenge on MyDigitalStudio.net be sure to stop over there and like and comment on my page – maybe I can win the challenge!  That would be exciting.  And if you want some more My Digital Studio inspiration Cindy and some other digital designers have a blog hop going on today – go here.

Have a great day!
