Tumbled Tile Coasters

Today is my Tumbled Tile Coasters class so I thought I would share with you some more designs along with the instructions on how I create my tiles and the box.  I received lots of questions when I posted my other design.  I’ve tried to reply to everyone so hopefully I didn’t miss anybody.

I created two designs using the Elements of Style stamp set coming out in the Stampin’ Up! Summer Mini Catalog on May 1st.

The first one features the large floral image and I added a letter from the Lovely Letters stamp set for a set of monogrammed tiles.  These were done in Chocolate Chip ink.

The second set uses the smaller vine image and the humming bird.  The colors are Old Olive and Ruby Red.

So here are some basic instructions on how I make my coasters.  I  buy Tumbled Tiles from the home improvement store – there are a few different colors – this time I’m using the whiter ones last time I used the ones with some more brown in them.  Then I rinse them in water and set them out to dry usually overnight.

  1. preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. stamp images using craft ink and cover with clear embossing powder.  Tap off excess powder – it should stick to the ink and doesn’t need to cover the whole tile.
  3. set tiles flat on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper
  4. put the baking sheet in the oven – I start with 6 minutes and check to see how they look
  5. it they still look powdery instead of shiny then they need longer – try 2-4 minute increments
  6. my last batch took 11- 1/2 minutes for 6 tiles
  7. remove from oven – don’t touch they are HOT – if needed finish any spots with a heat tool
  8. remove from baking sheet with a spatula and set on a towel on the counter to let them cool
  9. add felt circles to the bottom so they won’t scratch your furniture

The idea for the tiles and the box design came from Heather Summers as part of one of her classes.  She told me I could share the box dimensions with you.  For each box use one piece of 11-3/4″ x 11-3/4″ card stock.  Score on all four sides at 1-3/4″ and 3-3/4″.  After you score there are 4 squares in each corner.  You need to cut away the three outside squares from each corner.  Then cut on two opposite sides to create tabs from the ones that are left.  Here is a photo of what it looks like after you cut.  I also cut a small wedge out of the outer flaps so they will fold nicely into the inside of the box.

To make the box fold two of the tabs in and the fold the flap around and glue in place – I like to use a small amount of Tombow Multi-purpose adhesive.  Do the same to the opposite side.  Then fold in the remaining two flaps and glue them in place.  Tie a piece of wide ribbon around the box – or if you are giving it as a gift tie it over the top of the tiles to hold them in the box.

I hope that gives everyone the information they needed for this great project.  It has been one of my favorite and everyone has loved these.  The Elements of Style stamp set that I used for this project is one of the featured stamp sets during the preview week of Create with Connie and Mary which starts today.

Cookie Box

Last night I had my downline group meeting and as part of our meeting I wanted to do a cookie exchange – so everyone brought cookies to share.  With the idea of the cookie exchange in mind I decided that one of our projects that we make should be a cookie box.  So I sat down this weekend to design a cookie box.  While making my box I had my new Stampin’ Up! punches out on my craft table so I decided to use those to dress up my box a bit.  I love the look of these new punches – there is a corner punch with a matching border punch.  There are two sets that will be available in January.  I used the Scallop Trim Corner (it will be in the new Occaions Mini Catalog) and the Scallop Trim Border (it will be in the new Sale-A-Bration Brochure – so you can earn this one FREE).  The other set is called Pinking Hearts.  These are the new punch style and they look more like a stapler, the lock shut and you can store them by standing them on their ends or stacking them.  They punch very nicely too – I can even do it with my left hand and I’m not left handed.

Here is my finished cookie box.  See the nicely scalloped trim around the top.  I also scalloped the edge of the lid.

The bottom of the box is Chocolate Chip and only a little bit shows at the bottom under the scallop border but if you wanted more to show then you just need to make the side panels on the lid smaller.

For my box base I used a 12″ x 12″ piece of Chocolate Chip card stock.  Scored on all four sides at 2″.  I snipped two sides to form tabs and then glued it together to make the bottom of the box.  I have started using the Tombow MultiPurpose Adhesive for my boxes and it seems to be working well.  You only need a small amount and it costs much less than Sticky Strip.

The lid is Real Red card stock – also a 12″ x 12″ piece and it is scored just less than 2″ on all four sides.  This is so that the lid will fit over the base – I did about 1/16″ less for a snug fit.  I snipped two sides to form tabs and then punched all four edges with the Scallop Trim Border punch.  I glued the lid together at the corners, trimming where needed so nothing showed behind my pretty scallop edge.

The top piece is Whisper White – stamped with the large swirl from Baroque Motifs in Garden Green and Old Olive.  Stamped with the ornaments from Tree Trimmings – using Garden Green and Real Red ink.  The “Season’s Greetings” is from Many Merry Messages stamp set.  I sponged around the edges and added some Rhinestone Brads.

To create the Chocolate Chip mat with the scallop trim border was not working out as easily as I had hoped.  I worked with my corner and border punches trying to create the perfect square and after rounding the third corner somehow I was always crooked.  I’ll have to work on that some more but until then I came up with a cheater method to create the perfect square (you could also do a rectangle).  Besides it used less card stock this way too.  Do you want to know how I did it?

Monika’s Cheater Scallop Trim Square Tutorial:

Step 1 - four strips

1.  Start with 4 strips of card stock at least as long as you want your side to be – you can always trim of the extra if it is too long.  The width should be enough to punch the scallop trim corner punch and get the two scallops on one side.  On each strip punch one corner and then all the way down one long edge with the Scallop Trim punches.

Step 2 - match corner to end

2. Then you are going to match up one corner to an end of each strip.  You will trim at an angle up to the second scallop on the corner so you don’t have any extra card stock showing behind the next scallop.  You are going to match the scallops up at a right angle and glue the corner together.

Step 2 - glue together at a right angle

Step 2 - glue together at a right angle

3.  Now if you need to lay your piece that will be on top of the scallops and see how long you need your pieces to be – or complete your square and then measure for your top piece.  You will create a square by repeating step 2 for the other three corners.

Step 3 - make a square

Make sure you are at a right angle at each corner so that you end up with a square (or rectangle) in the end.  It might be easier to punch one more scallop around each corner so that you are matching up two instead of only one to help you stay straight.

4. Then add your layer on top of your square.  Or if you prefer – have your layer and glue your corners and strips to the back of it.  Since mine was very big for my cookie box I saved card stock this way because I don’t have any in the middle of my mat.

Step 4 - add layer on your square

close up of a corner

You really can’t tell that the scallop trim is made up of two pieces.  It is just barely visible in the close up photo on the left side.

So this was my cheater method for creating a nice square with the new scallop trim corner and border punches.  I’ll keep working with them on a full piece of card stock too and let you know if I figure out anything with that.  I have one theory that I am working on now that worked for me once – but that could have been luck – I need to be able to do it more than once for it to be a helpful hint.

Last night was fun.  This cookie box could also be used as a gift for a neighbor – of course you’ll want to fill it with cookies.  To give the box some extra support I cut a piece of the cardboard backer from our Designer Series Paper to sit inside the box.  I also laid some wax paper inside so I could put cookies in there – cut the wax paper to 12 x 12 and it fits inside and covers the sides too.  Or put your cookies in a plastic bag before putting them in the box.  Yesterday I made Snickerdoodles for my cookie for our exchange.  Yum Yum!

Thanks for stopping by today – I really need to finish my Christmas cards….. I do think I have just about all my shopping done – only a couple of little things left to find.  I put ornaments on our tree this morning.  I bought wrapping paper too – I thought I had some but apparently I used most of it up last year.

Have a Happy Day!

Sweet Centers Flower

My post yesterday was short because I was in a hurry in between various things I was doing.  So I’m back today to elaborate more on the flower – I had several people ask how to make the flower.  I think when you see the Sweet Centers stamp set in the Holiday Mini Catalog it isn’t completely clear what that stamp is supposed to be.

So here is my version of the flower – and I’m sure you can do it many different ways with different amounts and layers of petals. I tried a couple of different things before I settled on what was the easiest for me.

1.  First I started with a 3″ x 3″ square of card stock.  I used the 1-3/4″ circle punch to punch a circle out of the center.  I laid it over one of the sweet treat cups.

2.  I stamped 16 petals.  In these pictures they are just stamped in So Saffron ink on Whisper White card stock.  My finished example they are stamped in So Saffron and rolled in Close to Cocoa on the edges for each petal.  I cut out all 16 petals with my paper snips.  I tried to punch the petals with one of the oval punches but none of them fit exactly.   Now that I think about it if you didn’t have the stamp set you could still make flowers – by punching out petals with an oval and then use a circle to add the curve against the cup….just a thought of something else to try (wouldn’t that be pretty with DSP….ok see now I’m on to more ideas – I better get back to my craft room once I finish this post).

3.  I basically created 4 layers of petals.  The first layer is 4 petals attached to the square with snail.

flower-1

4.  The next layer is 4 more petals attached in the spaces between the first four.  Again using snail.  You could stop with that and have a pretty flower – but I wanted more.

flower-2

5.  I added the next layer of 4 petals with Stampin’ Dimensionals again in between the petals I already put down – place them in every other space.

The leaves you can see in this photo are attached with snail in between the layers that were snailed down and the ones on dimensionals.  I actually added them at the very end.

flower-36.    Then add the the last 4 petals in the remaining spaces using Stampin’ Dimensionals.

flower-47.  So to finish I trimmed the square in the back so that you couldn’t see it.  You may ask why didn’t I start with a circle – I tried that but it was harder to punch the hole out of the center and harder to get the petals lined up.  So for me I found it easier using the square and trimming it afterwards.  I did cut a 3″ circle using my Circle Scissors – my finished photo shows a So Saffron piece – but for my class I used Chocolate Chip which I like better.  This is the back of the flower.  So take the Sweet Treat cup and fill it with the candy – my picture used M&Ms but my class used chocolate covered raisins (they are all brown colored).  Fill the cup and adhere it to the Chocolate chip circle.  Then set it down and adhere the flower over the top of the cup – I just used my snail.

Then I used tape to attach the skewer to the back – my skewers were the ones from the Country Living Summer cookout kit (they aren’t pointed).

I added Old Olive ribbon and then create a tag using the Oval Stamp set.

Here is the final project one more time.

I hope that all made sense.  I have new example using the Valentine heart which was giving me trouble to begin with.  I figure out what to do though – so check back for that one on another day.

Thanks for stopping by – it is again a Rainy Day in Georgia …..stay dry.

What is it about Chocolate?

I don’t know what it is about Chocolate but I never have enough.  I’m actually talking about Chocolate Chip card stock – but that statement holds true for the real stuff too!

I swear I must eat my card stock in my sleep – I think I order lots of it and then all of a sudden my Chocolate Chip card stock is gone – AGAIN.  What am I doing with it?  I think I can safely say that it is my most used color of card stock.  I just placed another order and put 5 packs on my order so maybe I won’t run out so fast.  I need to make a habit of ordering one pack every time I place an order then I will never run out – right?

So let me see what have I been doing that used up the Chocolate Chip card stock – well you know what – some of it was used for Build-a-Bears, and some of it was used for my last Class to Go Kit – which by the way is now available as a tutorial – it just needs to be added to my tutorial for sale page – here is a photo of it –

August-Class-Kit-To-Go

And I used some in my new 50-50 JAR!

I wanted to try something else besides the 50/50 board but couldn’t come up with another idea so instead I decided to tweek the 50-50 board idea and I have turned it into a 50-50 jar.  50-50-jarIt is the same basic concept – place a $50 order and get a chance to win $50 of Stampin’ Up! product from me.  I used a big cracker jar.  Tied the new 1-1/4″ Striped Grosgrain Ribbon in Chocolate Chip around the jar.  I made a tag using Bella Bear’s stamp that says ” “LIFE WITHOUT STAMPS……UNBEARABLE….”

The tag was created like this – I stamped on Whisper White in Chocolate Chip ink and punched out with the 1-1/4″ Circle Punch.bear-stamp I layered that on a 1-3/8″ Circle punch of So Saffron.  Then I punched a Scallop Circle from Chocolate Chip card stock – this one I added White Gel Pen dots.  The stamped layered circle was added on to this one with a Stampin’ Dimensional to pop it up.  Then the next layer was my newest little discovery…..

I just got the Stampin’ Up! Two Tags die (THANKS GLORIA!) and I can tell this one will be one that gets used a lot.  One of the tags has a scalloped circle at one end that layers perfectly with the Scallop circle punch – but it only goes half way around – so this is what I did.  I used the Big Shot to cut one tag out of Old Olive card stock – then I placed that tag back on my die in the opposite direction matching up the scallops and cut it again – Ta-Da – a larger scallop circle to layer with my punch!

It shows a few of the perforated lines but that’s ok – I love how it layers!  I tied the tag with linen thread to my ribbon.

The inside of the jar is the other tag – the one that folds up.  I cut 50 of them in Old Olive, Chocolate Chip, So Saffron and Pumpkin Pie.  On each one I stamped Bella’s stamp – by the way I named my Stampin’ Up! Build-a-Bear “BELLA” – I’m not sure I announced that on my blog yet.   The idea with the tags inside the jar is that when someone has a $50 order they get to pick a tag and write their name and information on it – fold it in half and place it back in the jar.  Once all the tags are filled out I’ll draw a winner.

The top of the jar is the large scallop circle die – decorated with the White Gel Pen to resemble the perforated lines on the tag die.  And then I added the numbers/letters from the GoGo Boots Alphabet die.  I like how it turned out.  So lets fill up the jar!

One other weird thing to mention – I had this jar in a plastic storage box with a bottle of etching cream – the bottle was closed – we did some glass etching a year or so ago for the holidays – I may need to do that again using the Decor Elements!!  Anyway when I took out the cracker jar the back side is now frosted like it has been etched – do you think fumes from that bottle of etching cream got out and etched that jar?  It was all clear like the front to begin with.  That’s the only thing I can think of is that it was sitting next to the jar closed up in a plastic container and over time it just happened somehow…..weird isn’t it….

Enough for today…….it is pouring down rain here and thundering.  Stay dry!
