Thursday 3D – Paper Bags and Flowers

How about a 3D project share for Thursday?  I’m not sure if everyone gets what I mean when I say 3D project.  It’s not a card or a scrapbook page and it’s not flat.  There can be candy involved or another treat.  Gift packaging, little treats and such are all 3D projects.  Today I have a fun and easy to adapt idea that came from a fellow demonstrator.  I’ve seen various versions of decorating paper bags over the years.  In fact I had a stack of these white paper bags in my stash so I didn’t even have to go find any for this project. You may have paper bags on hand too – you could do brown bags or white bags or whatever you have on hand.

This is just a basic paper lunch sack.  I typically see them at the store in brown but there also come in white and sometimes you can find other colors too.  I measured the width of the bag to figure out how wide to cut my Designer Paper and then cut a 12″ piece to that width.  Another decision you need to make is how tall you want the bag to be.  I cut the top of my lunch bag off so it wasn’t so tall.  The taller your bag the smaller your overlaying flap is going to be.  You will cut a second piece of Designer Paper (it should be the other half of your 12×12 piece) to be the same width as the bag and the same height as the bag.  Attach this piece (the shorter one) to the front of the bag.  And attach the longer 12″ piece to the back of the bag and fold the rest over to the front to create a flap.  I added a piece of colored card stock on mine to give it some contrast.  That’s all you need to dress up a plain paper bag.

But who wants to stop with just the bag.  Next there is the flower and tag to decorate it with.  I attached this flower to a clothes pin so you can put it on the bag to hold it shut and then take it off.  The flower is made from the Lemon Builder punch!  Who knew you could turn lemons into flower petals.  To give each petal a little shape snip the smaller end of the lemon and glue dot one side over the other.  Attach the petals to a punched circle.  I did two layers offset and then added another circle punch to the back to hold it all together and one to the front to clean it up a bit.  Finish with a circle punched from the designer paper and a metal rimmed pearl in the center.  Instead of punching leaves I used the Lemon Lime Twist ribbon – tied in a bow and glue dotted to the clothes pin under my flower – to represent the leaves.  It’s finished with a tag.

This Petal Passion Designer Series Paper in Basic Black & Whisper White is fun to use on this type of project – you can dress it up with any color you want.  I wish this one wasn’t retiring – it’s so easy to use.  But it is retiring so if you want some you better order it now before it’s all gone!  The stamp set Petal Palette that it coordinates with is going to be in the new catalog – I used it to stamp the tag on this project.

Supply List

  • Petal Passion Designer Series Paper (retiring)
  • Sweet Sugarplum card stock (retiring)

I liked how this project turned out so much that I made another bag for a gift I needed to give.  This time I used different paper, different colors, and a different flower for this one. I used some retired framelits to create the flower because I wanted to mimic the ones in the paper.  This bag taller so you can see the overlap of the flap is smaller. If you know what you want to put in the bag then use that to help you determine how tall you want it to be.

Supply List

  • Pick a Pattern Designer Series paper (retiring)
  • Whisper White card stock
  • Basic Black card stock
  • Emerald Envy card stock (retiring)
  • Emerald Envy ink (retiring)

The rest is the various circle punches and then some retired dies to make the flower.  These would be fun bags to make for all different occasions using various papers.  You should try it and share your paper bag creations.

Try it Tuesday: Color your Black & White Paper

It’s Try it Tuesday on Wednesday.  It seems as soon as I get some things figured out and working other things stop working.  Sigh. When I was trying to edit my photos my editor wasn’t working correctly.  I have no idea what was wrong.  Our power went out Monday evening for about 30 minutes and then once it came back our internet and wifi were messed up.  It took a while to get all that going again.  I think we basically had to shut everything off and then get everything to reboot.  We keep getting more and more things that rely on internet/wifi.  Then when I went to reboot the computer it decided it was time to run a bunch of updates.  Anyway things weren’t working and I had to walk away.  Sometimes its best to walk away and come back later.

So on to today’s project.  Have you tried using the new Stampin’ Blends to color on Designer Series Paper?  I love it!  I love to use the black and white prints and add pops of color – it totally changes the look of the paper.  For today’s card I used the Pick a Pattern Designer Series Paper – the black with white spots.

I used the Stampin’ Blends in Daffodil Delight, Calypso Coral and Bermuda Bay.  Both the dark and light marker for each of the colors and just randomly coloring in the white spots.  I was able to maximize my paper by using 4×4″ pieces on my cards.  The images I stamped are from the Pick a Pattern stamp set.  This stamp set turned out to be one of my favorites from this catalog.  I used the different images and the coordinating paper a lot more often than I thought.  It’s just really fun!  The flowers are also colored with the Stampin’ Blends and the one extra flower was fussy cut and added to the front.

Supply List:

  • Pick a Pattern stamp set (retiring)
  • Pick a Pattern Designer Series paper (retiring)
  • Whisper White Thick card stock
  • Whisper White card stock
  • Stampin’ Blends: Daffodil Delight Combo, Bermuda Bay Combo, Calypso Coral Combo
  • Daffodil Delight Double-Stitched Ribbon
  • 1-3/4″ Circle Punch
  • Paper Snips
  • Dimensionals

You could do any color combination that you wanted with the Blends and Black and White Paper.  Have you tried coloring on your paper yet?

Paper Pumpkin Blog Hop – You Are My Anchor

Hello my friends.  It’s time for our monthly A Paper Pumpkin Thing Blog Hop – we are a little later than normal but I hope you will take time to visit everyone and enjoy all the projects.  This time it’s the April 2018 kit called You Are My Anchor.

18033233_10209661882799536_5639792754841057266_n

This April kit was really fun and perfect for the upcoming summer months.  I have just a couple of simple ideas to share with you.  But first here is a look at the kit. This is what you end up with if you make the kit as instructed but you do end up with left over bits and pieces that you can use for alternate ideas.

30051966_2034328716825000_122261011009043448_o

I grew up on the lake and sailed when I was younger.  My dad and brother are avid sailors and my parents actually live in a sailing club.  So this kit is perfect.  I made up a set of the little cards to give to my mom so she can use them for their friends at the club.

But I also wanted to do some other ideas with my kit so let’s take a look and see what I came up with.

You Are My Anchor Note Card

For this first project I made a little note card.  It was the bonus card that my Paper Pumpkin subscribers get to make when they come to my monthly card class.  I use the stamp set and the ink, maybe some of the left over elements and then add from my regular supplies.  The Note Cards & Envelopes are quick and easy for making cards so I use them frequently.  There were two items from the regular catalog that were added because they go well with this Paper Pumpkin kit – the Seaside Embossing Folder and the Island Indigo Ombre Ribbon.

The additional supplies that I added to complete this project were:

  • Card stock – Calypso Coral, Island Indigo, and Whisper White
  • Circle punches – 2-1/4″, 2″ and the 1/8″ handheld punch.  I used the 1/8″ punch out the little hole in the anchor and then tied some of the twine through there.
  • Whisper White Note cards & Envelopes
  • Seaside Textured Embossing Folder (plus the Big Shot)
  • Island Indigo Ombre Ribbon

You’re a Lifesaver Box

My second project was one that I thought of because I wanted to stretch my boxes.  The kit comes with 4 boxes but I thought what could I do if I wanted more than 4.  Plus the little phrase You’re a Lifesaver made me think of the Lifesavers candies and I decided those would be fun to put in a little box. So I took one of the boxes and cut it in half – both the base and the belly band.

Pay attention to which way you cut them – the belly band needs to still be a band to go around the box.  And the box needs one side with the adhesive to create the bottom.  Slide the belly band around the box and you end up with one open end.

I finished with supplies left over from the kit – the tags, the anchor and the twine.  The Pool Party ink is from an earlier Paper Pumpkin kit.  For my twine I actually thought it was a little bit thick.  So I took the piece and untwisted it so it became three pieces.  Then use one piece to tie around the box.  The only additional item I added was a 2″ x 8″ cello bag.  It holds the lifesavers candies.  Put 5 in and push them down to the bottom half of the bag, fold the bag in half and then slide inside the box.  A perfect little thank you treat for someone that did something extra special for you.

I hope you liked my projects today. Leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts.

Stampin’ Up! is going to be doing a Color Revamp this year.  It’s been 8 years since we made a significant change to our core colors.  Color trends are change over time and we want to keep our color offering fresh, new, and relevant.

What does that mean? Let’s take a look.

  • Colors will be updated in the 2018-2019 annual catalog.  This will start on June 1, 2018.
  • the In Color program will remain the same – with 5 colors rotating in each year and staying for 2 years
  • keeping 27 of our existing core colors
  • 13 core colors are going away
  • 5 In Colors (2016-2018) are going away

2018 colors

I’m excited about the changes and the new colors.  The majority of the retiring colors were not any that I was using.  I can’t wait to get my hands on the new ones!

I received these color swatches at the CenterStage event last weekend so here are all the colors in a pretty rainbow swirl!
