Color Challenge UDI49

Hi all!  This weeks color challenge was one that I wasn’t quite sure about.  Gretchen went back up to lots of colors again after several weeks of just a few.  I can’t decide which is more challenging a few colors or a lot of colors.  So here is the inspiration –

Six colors in this one – Baja Breeze, Marina Mist, Pumpkin Pie, So Saffron, Basic Black and Whisper White.  I wasn’t quite sure where to go with these aside from flower like the inspiration but I wanted to do something other than flowers.  I think my last few challenge project have all had flowers.  And then I finally figured it out and I love this card that I came up with – and no flowers!  Looky here it is……

I made a masked sunset card using the Sail Away stamp from the Stampin’ Up! Summer Mini Catalog.  Now this was the card I needed to make for my brother for his birthday – I just didn’t think of it until this week and his birthday was last week so I sent him something else.  He may just get two cards from me this year.

I took step by step pictures for you too.  So here is what I did.

step 1

Step 1: First stamp the boat on the Whisper White card stock – mine was 3″ x 3-1/2″ – and I used Jet Black StazOn ink.  Then stamp it again on a post it note and cut out right on the lines for the two sails and the hull of the boat.   Here is a helpful trick – use the two-way glue pen and put some glue on the back of the cut out pieces and let dry.  Now these become sticky but it is repositionable.

Add the mask on top of the stamped image on the white card stock matching up so that the sails are covered.  And then you will also need to cover the hull of the boat in just minute (I don’t have it covered in this picture).

step 2

Step 2: Punch a 1″ circle out of a scrap piece of card stock.  You will use the scrap piece as a mask to create the sun.  In this case your are covering the area around the circle that will become the sun.  I overlapped just a bit with the sail on the boat so it looks like it is behind the sail.

Step 3

Step 3: Use a Stampin’ Sponge and sponge the inside of the circle with So Saffron ink.  Then take another sponge and sponge the edges of the circle with the Pumpkin Pie ink.  This will make the center lighter and the outer edges darker.

Step 4

Step 4: Remove the circle mask for the sun, but leave the sails covered and make sure the boat hull is covered.  Now punch a scrap strip of card stock with the scallop edge punch and use this as a mask to create waves at the water line.  I sponged with Marina Mist ink, starting darker near the scallops and going lighter as you go down the card stock.  Move the scallop mask down into different spots so that you can make various waves as you sponge.

Step 5

Step 5: Now you have the sun sponged in and the water and waves sponged in.

Step 6

Step 6: Last I sponged Baja Breeze in the sky.  You can either cover the sun with the circle you punched out earlier or carefully sponge around it.  You can leave white space in the sky too, it doesn’t all need to be covered.

Once you are done with the sponging then remove the masks from the sails and the boat.

I stamped the greeting along the bottom.  And mounted the piece on Basic Black card stock.  I added a strip of Marina Mist card stock that was scalloped.  This is put on the front of the Pumpkin Pie card stock with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The final addition to the card is the Basic Black wide grosgrain striped ribbon on the side – the ends are overlapped and then tied together with a piece of Whisper White Baker’s Twine.

I hope you like it as much as I do!

Faux Mother of Pearl Clock

This is my current favorite technique – Faux Mother of Pearl – have you tried it yet?  It is so super easy your going to say why haven’t I done that before.  You need some Frost White Shimmer Paint, Whisper White or Very Vanilla card stock, plastic wrap, paper plate or tray, clothes pin, Stampin’ Sponge and Crumb Cake classic ink.  This technique was shown in a recent Stampin’ Success magazine (you know the one that all of us Stampin’ Up! demonstrators get each month).  They also showed it on colored card stock and used different colors of ink for the sponging part.   But this is the card I created so I’m going to tell you exactly what I did for mine.

Speaking of the card – the layout was inspired by another card that I found on a stamping website – I’m not sure who made it though.  Mine is a little different from that one and that person mentioned being inspired by a card shown at a regional I think in Australia.  So this idea I guess has been around the world…..

This is my card.  Another creation for my Last Chance class – the stamp set Sense of Time is retiring, along with the Elegant Soiree Designer Series Paper (one of my favorites from this catalog).   The clock is the Faux Mother of Pearl technique and this is how I made mine.

  1. Crumple up a piece of plastic wrap and then clip it with a clothes pin so you have a handle to hold it by – it’s just cleaner and keeps it off your fingers  – you don’t have to use the clothes pin if you don’t want.
  2. Put some drops of Frost White Shimmer paint on a paper plate.  Dab your plastic wrap into it and then dab some off – you want it thinner rather than thick globs.
  3. Dab the plastic with the paint on it all over your piece of card stock – I used Whisper White for this clock.  You just want splotches everywhere.  If it is a light layer it will dry pretty quickly.  Let it dry.
  4. Use a stampin’ sponge and Crumb Cake ink and sponge all over the card stock especially in between the shimmer paint.

That’s it.  Now you have the Faux Mother of Pearl created.  Next stamp your image over it.  I used Black StazOn ink for my clock.  I cut it out and the sponged the edges of the clock in Basic Gray ink. Here is a close up of the clock face – hopefully you can see the pearl on it –

I also used the shimmer paint on the top portion of the card background.  For this I used a sponge dauber to daub the paint onto my stamp and then stamped it on the card stock.  I also daubed a little with the plastic wrap too.  The center of the clock has an Antique Brad and I used some Crumb Cake Seam Binding on the card too.  The “happy birthday” is from Teeny Tiny Wishes.

I’ll be showing you this technique again next week on a scrapbook page and I’m using it on one of my convention swaps.  Which I’ll be showing later.  I hope you are having a great day!

Thanks for stopping by!

Color Challenge Tuesday – UDI #39

Hey guys!  It’s Color Challenge Tuesday with the UDI girls.  We are on week #39 and the inspiration picture was this exotic beach towel – don’t you just love the natural colors.  I do!  Sometimes I’m not excited about the colors that we have for our challenge but this week I thought it would be easy because I love to use the natural looking colors.

But much to my surprise I sat don’t with these four colors and couldn’t think of what to do with them.  I was thinking something natural and floral like the inspiration picture but it just wasn’t’ coming together at all.  So I pulled out my Last Chance Stamp set list and thought that I needed to use one of my sets that was on that list – give it a good farewell (I have a lot on that list so I better start now so I can get them all in before the end of June).  Then I got a great idea and found the perfect thing to do with these colors.  My stamp set of choice Extreme Skateboard – and what are these colors perfect for – camouflage!   So here is my extreme skateboard camo card for this week’s color challenge.

The background is a really fun technique that I haven’t done in a while – it does get your fingers inky (at least mine end up that way) – so perhaps it would be worth it to wear some gloves to keep your fingers clean.  First take a piece of Glossy White card stock and stamp your main image – the skateboarder – in Jet Black StazOn.  Take a baby wipe and fold it up into quarters or so – then add drops of ink – I used the Old Olive, Pear Pizzazz, and Always Artichoke – spread them a little apart.  Then pick up the baby wipe and dab it on a piece of Glossy White card stock.  Let it dry.  I used two pieces for this card and all of it was done with just one baby wipe – I didn’t have to add any more ink so you could do multiple cards at a time.  Now do watch out because the longer you wait the ink will bleed together on the baby wipe and depending on the colors you use will end up just looking muddy so don’t let it sit for too long before you use it.

To finish the card I distressed the edges of the layers and added some tearing and random staples trying to give it a rough look.  I added the wide striped ribbon too – I maybe should have cut it or torn it or something.  I hope you like it.

Color Challenge – UDI #37

Oh my goodness – I knew I was forgetting something yesterday but couldn’t figure out what it was.  It just hit me!  I needed to write my blog post for today for the Utah Diva’s Color Challenge.  Oops!  I’m here now.  So on to today’s challenge……

This weeks color combo was a more neutral muted combination of colors.  While our inspiration picture was a purse with flowers I decided to go a different route – and ended up with something probably more suited for a boy.  Here is the inspiration picture:

And here is the card I created based on a sketch and card idea from a paper craft magazine.

It isn’t one of my favorites but it includes all the colors for this challenge.  The base of the card is Soft Suede, then I have a layer of Basic Black.  On each end of the black is a strip of Pear Pizzazz that was embossed with the Big Shot and the Square Lattice embossing folder – I also punched out a notch – I was sure I had them lined up because I punched them a the same time but it turns out I had one flipped the wrong way and I wasn’t quite in the center – although I did try to measure for the center.  So I’m not really happy with it.

The Wish Big is from the Word Play stamp set that is on sale this month – so if you want this set make sure to buy it now.  I stamped it on the black with Versa Mark ink and covered it with White Embossing Powder and heat set it.  In the two notched out areas I added White Jumbo brads and then on the brad I stamped with Jet Black stazon the little star from Itty Bitty Bits (I think that is what it is called – I need to double check).  Then I punched large stars from Basic Gray, Pear Pizzazz, and So Saffron – two of each and they are stacked with dimensionals in between – so there is dimension to this card that you can’t see in this photo.  It makes a good boy card and isn’t everyone always looking for boy cards?

So there you have it – my color challenge card for the week.  Take a minute to visit the UDI site and play along with us this week.

You Mean the World to Me

You Mean the World to Me.  Yes you really do!

That’s the phrase that I used on this masculine card.

The idea for this card came from a magazine.  I combined the new The Open Sea stamp set in the Stampin’ Up! Summer Mini Catalog with the Word Play stamp set that is on sale this month for 30% off.  They worked well together.

The card base is Early Espresso and it is stamped with the globe and manifest images from The Open Sea stamp set.  Then I added Not Quite Navy and and embossed/torn layer of Crumb Cake.

On top of that is a Whisper White piece stamped with “You Mean the World to me” and sponged to give it an old look.  I wrapped around a piece of the new Baker’s Twine (this one is the Early Espresso) and tied a button through it.

To pop out the “world” – I stamped it on scratch paper in Not Quite Navy and punched it out with the circle punch and popped it up with a Stampin’ Dimensional.

My envelope was stamped to match.  And on the inside is a panel of Whisper White and the corner of it was also stamped to match.

A very nice masculine card.  I hope you like it!

Open Sea – Coaster Desk Organizer

This desk organizer featuring the Nautical Expedition Designer Series paper and The Open Sea stamp set was one of the projects we made at my hands-on class last week.

The organizer is made using square coasters.  I covered the outsides and insides of the coasters with the Designer Series Paper.  Then use a Crop-A-Dile to punch holes – I hold two coasters together where the sides will match and then punch the holes through at the same time so they line up.  I usually mark each corner A, B, C, D so I know which two match up when I’m trying to put it all together.

To put it together I used Jute – which is thicker than hemp that Stampin’ Up! sells but you could also use that for this project.  I liked the look of the Jute and had some in my stash so that was what I went with.

Here is a view of what the inside looks like.

For the front decoration I actually cut another coaster with my Big Shot and the Circles #2 die – I used the largest circle on the die which happens to be the same size as our largest circle punch.  On a piece of card stock I stamped the various images from The Open Sea stamp set – in sort of a collage.  I punched it out and sponged the edges and glued it to my coaster circle – I suppose I could have stamped directly on the coaster since it was plain white but I didn’t.  I added the star punched from Crumb Cake card stock, stamped with the manifest image, and put in a Cherry Cobbler brad. I tied a couple of pieces of the Jute into a square knot and added it to the front.

This could sit on a dresser and be a drop off spot for a cell phone, car keys, wallet.  Or on the end table and hold all the tv remotes.  Or on a desk and hold pencils, scissors and stuff. I have one in my craft room – its got my pens, pencils, my different scissors, my bone folder, paper piercer, and more.   Decorate with flowers and such if you want it to be feminine or like this one to make it masculine.
